Can I Choose My Own Repairer After an Accident?

The short answer: no, you don't have to use your insurance company's approved garage. Here's how that actually works.

It's the question we're asked more than any other. You've had an accident, you've rung your insurer, and within a minute you're being booked into a repair centre you've never heard of, sometimes a long way from home. It can feel like the decision has already been made for you. It hasn't. In the UK a motorist is free to choose who repairs their vehicle, and an insurer's approved network is a recommendation, not a requirement.

Where the right to choose comes from

Your motor policy is a contract to indemnify you — to put you back in the position you were in before the loss. It does not hand ownership of your car to the insurer, and it does not give them the power to decide who touches it. What insurers do have is a commercial network of approved repairers they've negotiated rates with, and understandably they'd prefer you used it. That preference is not a legal obligation.

Insurers can, and often do, attach conditions to using a non-approved garage. Some will ask for a written estimate before authorising work. Some will not extend their own repair guarantee to work carried out elsewhere, which is fair enough — in that case the repairing garage's own guarantee applies instead. Occasionally a policy will offer a lower excess for staying inside the network. None of that removes your choice; it just means it's worth reading the terms so you go in with your eyes open.

What to say when you call your insurer

You don't need to argue, and being polite gets you further than being firm. A simple version works:

    • "I'd like to use my own repairer for this claim. Can you tell me what you need from them?"
    • "Could you confirm in writing what conditions apply if I don't use an approved repairer?"
    • "My garage will send an estimate directly — who should it go to?"
    • "The accident wasn't my fault, so I'd like the claim handled on that basis."

Why an independent specialist can be the better option

Approved networks are built around volume and turnaround. They contain some genuinely excellent shops, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. But the commercial pressure in a rate-negotiated network tends to push toward the quickest acceptable repair rather than the best one. Repair-versus-replace decisions, how far paint is blended into adjacent panels, and how much time goes into prep are all places where corners can quietly be cut.

At a small independent shop the person quoting your car is the person repairing it, and their reputation locally is the whole business. We colour match with a spectrophotometer rather than by eye, blend metallics into neighbouring panels so there's no visible edge, and oven cure everything for a finish that holds up. If something isn't right, you speak to the person who did it.

There's also a practical point. If your car is in Cardiff, Penarth or Barry, having it repaired locally means you can drop in, see progress and collect it without a long trip.

If the accident wasn't your fault

Non-fault claims give you more freedom still, because the costs are recovered from the at-fault driver's insurer rather than through your own policy. In that situation you can instruct a repairer of your choice and, in most cases, there's no excess for you to pay. Our partner National Accident Support Line, an FCA-regulated claims management company, handles the claim while we handle the car.

    Frequently asked questions

No. UK motorists are entitled to choose who repairs their vehicle. An insurer may recommend an approved repairer and may attach conditions such as requiring an estimate first, but they cannot compel you to use their network.

No. Choosing your own repairer does not invalidate a policy. It may mean the insurer's own repair guarantee doesn't apply, in which case the repairing garage's guarantee covers the work instead.

Insurers settle at what they consider a reasonable cost for the repair. Where an estimate exceeds their assessment they may query specific items, which is a normal part of the process and something we handle directly with them.

Some policies do apply a different excess for non-approved repairs. It varies between insurers, so ask them to confirm the position in writing before you commit.

Yes, the right to choose a repairer applies either way. The difference is that a fault claim goes through your own policy, so your excess and no-claims bonus are affected as normal.

Send us photos through the estimator on this site or on WhatsApp for an indicative figure, then bring the car in so we can produce a proper written estimate for the insurer.

    Important information

Chris Jenkins Vehicle Specialist (CJVS) is a vehicle body repair business. We carry out the repair work on your vehicle. We are not a claims management company, we are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and nothing on this page is legal advice.

The claims, personal injury, replacement vehicle, recovery and storage elements described here are provided by National Accident Support Line (NASL), a claims management company authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, FCA registration number 829991. NASL can be contacted on 0333 212 2730. Personal injury claims are handled through their panel of solicitors on a no win no fee basis.

CJVS works with NASL and may receive a commission for replacement vehicle (credit hire) referrals. This does not add anything to what you pay.
